A2/B1 - Practice -ed pronunciation with common verbs
Hello, my lovely people!
Today I have a special activity to help you improve your English pronunciation.
We are going to practise how to pronounce the -ed ending in regular verbs.
In English, -ed can be pronounced in three different ways:
/ɪd/ /t/ /d/
Let’s see when we use each one.
When do we use each pronunciation?
- /ɪd/: We add one extra syllable. We use it when the verb ends in the sounds /t/ or /d/. Examples: wanted, needed
- /t/: We do not add an extra syllable. We use it when the verb ends in sounds like /p/, /k/, /f/, /s/. Examples: stopped, watched
- /d/: We do not add an extra syllable. We use it when the verb ends in vowel sounds or sounds like /n/, /r/, /v/. Examples: cleaned, loved
In this activity, you will:
- Learn the rules
- Listen to examples
- Practise with common verbs
- Improve your fluency and confidence
You can also download the PDF version if you prefer working on paper.
💬 Final challenge: Write one sentence in the past using a regular verb. Then say how the -ed ending is pronounced: /ɪd/, /t/ or /d/.
Example:
I watched a film. → /t/
Enjoy it!
