B2/C1 – Cultural differences while traveling
Hello, my lovely people!
This week I am bringing you something special for those of you who enjoy travelling and improving your English at the same time. Have you ever wondered how Christmas is celebrated across different English-speaking countries? In this activity, you will explore distinctive and fascinating traditions that will allow you to view the festive season from a broader cultural perspective.
Cultural differences while travelling
Today we will focus on several popular destinations for Spanish travellers during the Christmas period: England, Scotland, Ireland, Gibraltar and Malta.
You will expand your advanced vocabulary, reflect on cultural contrasts and discover intriguing traditions that reveal how diverse Christmas celebrations can be within the English-speaking world.
First, you will read three short texts describing Christmas customs in these countries.
Then, you will complete an interactive Wordwall activity to test your understanding.
Finally, you will reflect on your own Christmas traditions and draw comparisons with those of English-speaking communities.
Did you know that in Gibraltar, Christmas meals often include traditional British Christmas crackers with a Mediterranean influence? Or that in Malta, in addition to Midnight Mass, families enjoy sweets such as imqaret, delicious pastries filled with dates?
New vocabulary related to Christmas and travel.
-
How to use contrast and comparison connectors in English.
-
And most importantly, how to appreciate and enjoy cultural differences.
If you prefer working offline, I have also prepared a PDF version of the activities so you can print it and review everything at your own pace.
💬 Final challenge: Write a short paragraph comparing Christmas traditions in an English-speaking country with those in your own country. Include at least two contrast connectors such as however, while, whereas or on the other hand.
Keep practising!
