A2/B1 – Interactive practice: TH pronunciation /θ/ or /ð/?

Hello, my lovely people!

Today I have a new activity to help you improve your English pronunciation. We are going to practise the two common sounds represented by TH: /θ/, as in think, and /ð/, as in this.

These two sounds can be difficult for learners because the spelling is the same, but the pronunciation is different. Training your ear will help you recognise them more easily and pronounce them more clearly.

Quick Pronunciation Guide

Sound How to pronounce it Examples
/θ/ Put your tongue lightly between your teeth and let the air pass through. Do not use your voice. think, three, birthday
/ð/ Use the same tongue position, but this time make your vocal cords vibrate. this, mother, weather

💡 Tip: Put your fingers gently on your throat. With /ð/ you should feel vibration; with /θ/ you should not.

Activity: Listen carefully to each word and identify its TH sound: /θ/ or /ð/. Drag each word to the correct pronunciation group.

• /ð/ – as in this

🇬🇧🇺🇸 Extra listening challenge: Most of the recordings use British English pronunciation, but two words use American English voices. Can you spot them?

💬 Final challenge: Choose one word with /θ/ and one with /ð/ and write a sentence with each one in the comments. Then read your sentences aloud, paying attention to the TH sound.
